Saturday night is movie night at Chez Smothers: Thank you, Netflix. This week we watched "The Express" starring Rob Brown and Dennis Quaid from 2008. I found myself rivited by the superb acting and disquieted by the story. The story is an old one...discrimination based on nothing more than skin color and fostered by human ignorance. Observing this beautiful boy being taunted and put down time and time again was very hard to watch...knowing that the scenerio is true then and now for countless human beings who just happen to be "different".
President Obama is a beacon of hope for us all. Giving us all a chance to celebrate our belief in his goodness, and correct long held patterns of intolerance and feelings of false superiority.

I am inspired to applaud a few of the beautiful and talented "different ones"...not heros, not perfect, but perfectly heroic when you think about it. Ernie Davis, Florence Joyner Kersey (Flo Jo, who can forget her?), Pam Grier (as the struggling but triumphant Jackie Brown) and our President of the United States. I am so proud of the United States voters.
