Low Tide

Today we had a -2.6 low tide. Our very lowest tide is
-4.0, and we usually have that tide during the day in the summer for a couple of days...but it is rare. So, any minus tide is worth exploring Today it is sunny and warmish, so off I went. Thinking I would be gone for maybe 45 minutes I alerted my husband to my plans. I need to do that because we have black bears hereabouts and they are active now. I digress. Today I came across an unusually large number of sunflower seastars stranded by the low tide, plus some red rock crabs. I always pick up the living creatures and move them into the shallow water hoping that I can save them. I also saved a couple of herring, but I can't do anything about the sea anemones that are exposed...they are clinging fast to rocks, wood, etc. and not to be pried loose. Yet, they do survive exposure because I find them year in and year out in the same places.
Whilst I was strolling and rescuing, an adult bald eagle observed from his perch. When my back was turned he glilded down to the wet sand and just sat there for the longest time. The crows that usually chase him off left him alone for a nice long rest. Guess I was gone too long because my husband came looking for me. "Beautiful day for a walk, huh?" He has a good sense of humor.
